What is cacao?

Cacao is what gives chocolate its chocolatey taste. It’s also responsible for the good feelings that we experience when we eat it. Cacao itself is made from fermented cacao fruit seeds that are ground into a paste. When it was first discovered at least 5,000 years ago, cacao was considered medicine and was consumed during rituals and ceremonies.

How is ceremonial cacao different?

Ceremonial cacao is made from heirloom and land-raised strains from Central America with higher mineral content. It contains all of its natural fats and is minimally processed to maximize health benefits. It is grown sustainably and organically in an agroforestry setting.

This is a clip from a short doc we produced about ceremonial cacao and cacao ceremonies with members of the Tzutujil community in Lake Atitlan Guatemala.
